Miami Man Arrested for Money Laundering Scheme

A Miami man was arrested by FBI agents and charged with money laundering on Monday, May 22. He is charged along with his fugitive brother, who is reported to live in Cuba and is said to have owned Caribbean Transfers, an offshore remittance company. The charges allege that some part of $238 million was transferred from a Medicare scheme into the Cuban banking system. Some of the money is said to have been laundered through Caribbean Transfers into bank accounts in Canada.Miami prosecutor Ron Davison has called Caribbean Transfers a kind of offshore Western Union. However, the company, which folded in 2012, disclaims any fraud and attacked Miami newspapers for their reports. It placed the fault with a Miami remittance firm that sent money to Cuba through Caribbean Transfers. The remittance firm was not identified, although other sources have named its former owner, who is serving 18 years in prison for false reports of money transfers.Money laundering is the unlawful practice of hiding the amount, the source, and/or the destination of money or assets, usually via a bank. In criminal acts, money is made to look as though it came from legal sources instead of the actual illegal sources. In this way, criminal activity can be hidden. With many global financial markets today, money laundering has become an easier process. It is more and more possible anonymously to deposit so-called dirty money in one country, but then have it easily transferred to another country for actual use. This happens almost anywhere in the world.

If you are faced with money laundering charges, contact the firm of Hassett & Associates. Kenneth Hassett has been practicing in the Miami Dade County area since 1991. The criminal defense firm is open to take your calls seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Teen Arrested for Twitter Joke

Twitter is becoming troublesome, or at least is becoming a platform for bad public behavior. Social media is central in the life of many teenagers as they grow through adolescence to adulthood, but part of that learning curve is making personal mistakes. According to the Miami-Herald, that is apparently what one 15-year old Miramar, Florida boy recently did when he “tweeted” on his Twitter account that he was “about to rape a lil’ girl.”

The teenager then made bad public behavior even worse when he posted a comment to the Twitter account of the Miami area that was hash-tagged and directed at the Miami Police Department suggesting he had been raping young girls and the police department was not responding. He then provoked the police again by asking “does my avi not scare you,” which was a hologram profile picture of himself. This time the Miami Police Department responded and arrested the minor, who was charged with a misdemeanor of making a false police report. He stated that he was “just joking.”

Illegal behavior in the South Florida area generated on Twitter has also included adults, as 38-year old fireman Gabriel Diaz was arrested for posting 16 images of underage girls having sex. His attorney stated in the defense that Diaz was unaware the girls where all underage. The legal question in both of these includes whether Twitter should change the posting policy for lewd or illegal image posting. Facebook and You Tube censor all content for explicit lewdness, but all social media sites to do not maintain this policy. There is clearly room for legal arguments for a criminal defense attorney in both of these cases and the outcomes may impact further issues with social media, at least in certain states. That is not to mention the lives of these two defendants.

Censoring content on social media can be a controversial issue in some instances, but claiming to rape someone or sharing pornography can still be problematic behavior. However, the government is not entitled to a conviction, and in some cases the particular court system may not have jurisdiction over the social media platform. Anyone who is involved in a computer-related or cyber crime should always retain an experienced and effective criminal defense attorney like Miami computer crime lawyer Kenneth Hassett of Miami. The Hassett Firm criminal defense legal team fights aggressively for all clients and ensures that all client rights are observed in the court process. They can be contacted at any of their offices in the Broward County or Miami-Dade County area, or by contacting the the official firm website.

A Palm Beach County teacher is accused of child abuse of allegedly giving a toddler a cut under her tongue. Because the child refused to eat after receiving the injury, the father became aware of the incident. The girl told her father that she got the cut in Ms. Zully’s class. After undergoing a medical exam, the doctor found that the child may have acquired the injury from someone forcibly shoving an object into her mouth. The teacher accused of this crime was arrested Thursday.

According to authorities, Zully Marilu Ruiz Yapan faces two counts of child abuse charges—one for the toddler and the other for an unidentified child. The 38 year old teacher was released on Friday from the Palm Beach County Jail.

Anyone charged with child abuse should always retain an experienced and effective criminal defense attorney. Maimi County Employee Arrested for Theft, Drug Possession

An electrician from the Miami-Dade County’s Water and Sewer Plant was recently arrested and charged for numerous crimes relating to theft and drugs. Timothy Williams, the suspect in the case, has been working for Miami-Dade County for 22 years. According to the charges, Williams spent the past 10 years on the job stealing county items and vital supplies. In turn, the charges state that Williams would pawn the stolen Miami-Dade County items at a local shop. Over the past 10 years, the stolen items accumulated a massive $5,000 value. However, the suspect requested to be paid for the stolen goods in drugs only, such as cocaine and marijuana. That is why the suspect was arrested on both charges relating to theft and possession of cocaine, which is a controlled substance.

Dealing with the theft charges is going to be tough for the suspect, especially since there might evidence and testimony against him. The suspect is probably going to speak to a good Miami theft lawyer to provide an adequate defense against the charges of theft in this particular case.

However, the suspect is also dealing with charges relating to possession of a control substance. A drug conviction can be dreadful. The charges can be a misdemeanor or felony, but both are bad. If a suspect is found guilt of possession of a controlled substance in Miami-Dade County, such as cocaine or marijuana, then there could be severe consequences. A drug conviction could result in losing a driver’s license, impacting employment, a monetary fine or jail time. The State must prove beyond a responsible doubt that the suspect had possession and knowledge of the illicit nature of a controlled substance.

It would be wise for the suspect to contact a trusted Miami drug possession lawyer, such as a lawyer at the criminal defense team of Hassett & Associates. They are experienced and skilled on all types of drug cases. They might be able to convince the prosecutor to drop the case or drop to a lesser charge.

A former Miami Beach police officer, William Skinner, who was serving a life sentence for a violent attack on his estranged wife in 2009 won’t remain in prison for attempted murder; however, he will remain in prison for armed burglary.

According to authorities, the 58 year old was arrested June 1, 2009, after Skinner allegedly choked his wife and fired his gun at both his wife and her boyfriend with his 4 year old son present. Her boyfriend survived a bullet wound to the shoulder.

In May 2011, a jury convicted Skinner of two counts of attempted second-degree murder, and one count of armed burglary. Skinner received a life sentence on one of the attempted-murder charges and burglary count, and 15 years on the second attempted-murder count.

Although the Third District Court of Appeal ruled that errors in the state’s standard jury instructions nullified the attempted-murder counts, he will still serve a life sentence for his burglary charges. According to the prosecutor, Skinner does not have any options left if he chooses to fight the armed-burglary conviction.

Sentencing of NSU Professor’s Killer Held for 2 Years After Conviction

Two years ago, Randy W. Tundidor was convicted of the murder of his landlord, Nova Southeastern University professor Joseph Morrissey, and recommended execution by the jury in a 12-0 vote. However, the defendant has not been sentenced yet because of several post conviction appeals.

Although a two-year gap between conviction and sentencing is rare in any case, issues regarding the competency of the defendants previous lawyer–now a judge–and the conduct of the judge that presided over the case have caused a delay in this case. The appealing process alone took over a year and the defendant was denied.

According to authorities, Tundidor was convicted of murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and kidnapping on May 9, 2012. Because Professor Morrissey was evicting the defendant from a Plantation townhouse, Tundidor recruited his son, Randy H. Tundidor, to attack the Morrissey home. Testifying against the father, the younger Tundidor told the jury that he kidnapped the Morrisseys and took, took them to a bank, and made them take out $500 before he returned them to their home. Tundidor was allegedly watching the Morrisseys’ 5-year-old son. After the transaction was made, the elder Tundidor stabbed Morrissey to death, then he and his son set fire to the house, intending to kill Morrissey’s wife and son. Thankfully, both the mother and the son survived the fire.

According to the prosecutor, the Tundidor case is coming to a close. His status court date is on Wednesday and his hearing will be in late July. While the elder Tundidor pleads for his life, his 25 year old son was already sentenced in 2012 to 40 years in prison for his role in the crime.

According reports, an investigative panel’s recommendation to the Supreme Court persuaded the court to suspend Broward County Judge Gisele Pollack without pay, pending the final outcome of the incident. Judge Pollack allegedly violated the code of judicial conduct during her struggles with alcoholism. According to authorities, she relapsed just 16 days after agreeing to be sober and later had the DUI crash. Because of these alleged violations, she now faces criminal and professional charges from the Florida Judicial Qualifications Commission.

According to her legal team. Pollack relapsed after the death of her mother, with whom she was very close. Because she was emotionally impaired from her mother’s death, Ms. Pollack found it harder to deal with the ongoing struggles of her adult son, who was disabled after a surgery. The goal of her legal team is to have her suspension eventually lifted and ask the court to reconsider suspending her with pay. Pollack’s term ends in 2016.

Although no formal charges have been filed for her DUI case, Pollack’s case was moved to Miami-Dade County. Prior to these incidents, Judge Pollack ironically oversaw cases in a drug court.

They claimed he had been involved in the crimes for about 10 years and alleged that he sold more than $5,000 worth of property. They reportedly discovered his involvement after they went to a pawn shop where they identified the subject and said that the man had been frequenting the shop for years. Two University of Miami Students Arrested for Rape

Two student athletes at the University of Miami are facing serious charges after being arrested by the Coral Gables Police following a rape investigation.

According to various news sources, Alexander Figueroa and Jawand Blue, both 20, have been charged with sexual battery for an alleged assault on an unnamed 17-year-old girl. A law enforcement affidavit filed on the incident states the attack allegedly occurred on July 5th.

On that day, Figueroa and Blue allegedly arranged for the underage girl to illegally consume alcohol and narcotics against her will. After this, the two young men took the young girl to Figueroa’s dorm room where they took turns performing numerous sexual acts on her. The teen was described in the affidavit as being “physically helpless to resist” the assault.

After the alleged assault, the teenage girl contacted the University of Miami campus police to report that she had been raped. The school’s police department then contacted the local authorities to inform them of the teen’s allegations. According to a spokesperson for the Coral Gable Police Department, Figueroa and Blue turned themselves in on July 8th after becoming aware of the fact they were being investigated for rape. The were arrested at that point without incident.

In the state of Florida, criminal charges such as sexually battery and rape are very severe. The Florida statute defining a victim’s condition during a sexual battery reads as follows:

“Mentally incapacitated” means temporarily incapable of appraising or controlling a person’s own conduct due to the influence of a narcotic, anesthetic, or intoxicating substance administered without his or her consent or due to any other act committed upon that person without his or her consent. (Florida Statue 794.011, section C)

When a defendant is found guilty in Florida on a charge of rape or sexual battery, the consequences they face are very serious. Depending on the circumstances of the victim in the case, a rape or sexual battery conviction can lead to a minimum of nine years or a maximum of life in prison.

If you or anyone you know in the Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, and Miami Dade County areas has been charged with a serious felony sex offense, a capable Miami rape defense lawyer can help you explore legal options during your ordeal.

A domestic violence suspect, Christopher Colon, will be spending 364 days behind bars in Broward for using excessive profanity when speaking to Judge Jay Hurley. The 27 year old was supposedly upset with the judge for denying him pre-trial release from jail in bond court.

According to reports, Colon was accused of twice-violating a court injunction and a battery causing great bodily harm. Judge John “Jay” Hurley did set bond at $125,000 for each of the two violations but denied Colon a bond on the battery charge.

Because Colon felt that the Judge was being unreasonable, Colon cursed him out for several minutes. After listening to his rant, Judge Hurley declared him in contempt of court and sentenced him to 364 days in jail.

Both individuals had changed clothes following the incident.

The death of Pastor Kenneth Johnson opens up an issue in the community with complaints that there are not enough opportunities for the youth, which has lead to high crime rates. The area is known to become more dangerous at night during the summer when more people are seen outdoors.

Senior Pastor Vincent Spann said, “I should be morning but I have a sense of joy because I believe his death will cause greater things to happen. I believe it’s going to catapult us into action and change this community so they’ll get tired of not talking. A vigil was later held at the convenience store’s parking lot on Friday for Johnson with over 30 people in attendance. Salt was sprinkled on the parking lot with candles lit in remembrance.

Unlike most convenient stores that sell diapers and milk, Kwik Stop sells typical convenient store items as well as packets of synthetic marijuana and SKS rifles.

The store remained closed after a heavily armed police SWAT team busted the store and arrested the manager. The six-month undercover operation has finally come to a close after citizens began calling in anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers.

Some of the items seized during the raid were various drugs, drug paraphernalia, cash, a Taurus 9 mm handgun and a total of 423 bags of synthetic cannabinoid. Detectives also discovered evidence that Mr. Sulaiman was conducting fraudulent transactions involving food stamps.

According to authorities, Ayman Sulaiman, 36, was arrested–with his seven young children present–and faces 17 charges, including possession of cocaine with intent to sell, possession of amphetamine and synthetic cannabis, and fraud involving food stamps. Although Sulaiman is arrested, authorities believe that there are still other suspects involved. Sulaiman was held in the Broward County jail on a $43,100 bond.

Two Miami Men Arrested For Charity Scams

Two men who were involved in charity scams in Miami have been arrested. The scams targeted the Haitian-American community in South Florida. Jeff Atwater, who is the Chief Financial Officer in Florida, stated that Jacques Albert Caltixte stole $300,000 in state funds by using his charity, Haitian American Association Against Cancer. Two Women Arrested in Miami for DUI

Two women from the Pembroke Pines, Florida area received several charges earlier this week. One of the most serious is driving under the influence or DUI after they caused havoc at a Sally Beauty Supply store. The women, Veronica Cabanas and Cathleen Ibanez, had a child that was only two years old with them when they were arrested. The police were able to find them after Cabana’s mother alerted them that the driver was possibly impaired. The mother was concerned because she knew that Cabana and Ibanez were driving while intoxicated and had her two year old grandchild in the car as a passenger.Approximately an hour and a half later, police were called to the beauty supply store. Authorities stated that Cabanas and Ibanez were creating a disturbance. In addition, according to the police report, Cabanas was attempting to have her two year old urinate into a bottle of a beauty product. Both she and Ibanez were allegedly throwing items throughout the store, creating a disturbance.

By the time the police were on the scene and approached the women, the two were in the car. Ibanez was in the driver’s seat and the car was running although in park. The police reported that the child was in the car but not secured in a car seat. Of course, it is required by law that toddlers are secured in a car seat while in a vehicle.

As they conducted their investigation, the police reported that both women had glazed over eyes and that their speech was extremely slurred. The officers performed roadside sobriety tests and came to the conclusion that Ibanez was under the influence.

In addition, according to the police affidavit, they located several pill bottles inside the woman’s purse. Among them was a bottle of oxycodone. Ibanez does not have a prescription for these drugs.

According to police, Cabanas was stumbling around and was warned several times not to get behind the wheel. Instead, she ignored the orders from police and sat in the driver’s seat of the car while the engine was running. She denied using any drugs or drinking alcohol. However, following the roadside sobriety tests, the police concluded that she too was under the influence and the two women were arrested and taken to jail.

Cabanas was charged with DUI, DUI with a child under 18 in the vehicle, resisting arrest, child neglect and driving a motor vehicle while knowing that her license was suspended.

Ibanez was charged with DUI, DUI with a child under 18 in the vehicle and drug possession.
